Simon Beaven, MD, PhD

Assistant Professor, Vatche and Tamar Manoukian Division of Digestive Diseases, Department of Medicine, David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA

The research of Dr. Beaven focuses on cholesterol and lipid metabolism as it pertains to an important clinical problem: the metabolic syndrome. He studies the liver X receptor (LXR) and his current projects are rooted in understanding how cholesterol homeostasis impacts the pathogenesis of the component diseases of the metabolic syndrome, including fatty liver (non-alchoholic fatty liver or NAFLD), diabetes/insulin resistance, and the progression to liver fibrosis (non-alcholic steatohepatitis or NASH). The long-term goal of Dr. Beaven is to establish a thematic research program rooted in cholesterol and fatty acid metabolism within the gastrointestinal tract. He has expertise in signal transduction, nuclear receptors and metabolic and nutrient-related diseases.
