Anna Gukovskaya, PhD

Professor, Division of Digestive Disease, Department of Medicine, David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA; Veterans Administration Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System

Dr. Gukovskaya studies signaling pathways mediating cell death responses in pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer. She has established that pancreatic acinar cells produce and respond to cytokines, including tumor necrosis factor. She found that both apoptosis and necrosis contribute to acinar cell death in pancreatitis, and that these cell death pathways are differentially regulated by mitochondrial alterations and protease activation. Dr. Gukovskaya also demonstrated that production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) is unregulated in pancreatic cancer cells and that ROS mediate survival of pancreatic cancer cells, probably by inhibiting cellular phosphatases.
