Yasutada Akiba,MD, Ph.D.

Research Scientist, VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System

Dr. Akiba studies mucosal defense mechanisms of the upper gastrointestinal tract. He has developed a unique system in which he has simultaneously measured mucus gel thickness, mucus secretion, intracellular pH, and blood flow in the mucosa of living rats. More recently, he has measured intracellular pH of epithelial cells of transgenic mice duodenum in an effort to understand the role of bicarbonate secretion in mucosal defense.  He has also studied the role of intestinal ecto-enzymes, including alkaline phosphatases, in CO2 absorption and in purinergic signaling. He also has embarked on a study of taste reception in duodenal enterocytes.
